Norman Manley International Airport - All Information on Norman Manley International Airport (KIN)

Norman Manley International Airport (IATA: KIN, ICAO: MKJP), formerly Palisadoes Airport, is serving Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica. It is located south of the island 19 kilometers away from the center of New Kingston.

It is the second busiest airport in the country after Sangster International Airport, recording approximately 629,000 arriving passengers in 2020 and 831,000 in 2021.

Over 130 international flights a week depart from this facility. Named in honor of Jamaican statesman Norman Manley, it is a hub for Caribbean Airlines.

The airport sits 3 meters above sea level at 17°56′08″N and 076°47′15″W.

History of Kingston Airport

Jamaica has long had a vibrant civil aviation industry, with the first flight reported in the island in 1911.

In 1930, the first commercial flight, a Consolidated Commodore twin-engine flying boat operated by Pan American Airways (which eventually became Pan American World Airways), landed in Kingston Harbor.

In 1934, Dr. Albert Edward Forsythe and C. Alfred "Chief" Anderson (the fathers of African American aviation) arrived in Jamaica from Cuba. This was the first time a land plane arrived at the island by air.

The significant growth in the aviation sector led to the establishment of the Civil Aviation Department in 1947.

In 1948, the Kingston Air Traffic Control Centre (KATCC) was established. In the same year the Palisadoes Airport (now Norman Manley International) and the Montego Bay Airport now Sangster International Airport were established.

The airport has undergone several refurbishment projects since 1999, including the resurfacing of the runway in 2001, the reconstruction of the eight taxiways in 2002, replacement of the airport apron, and underground fuel hydrant system in 1999.

Landside improvements at the airport have included the upgrading and rehabilitation of the national air traffic control and navigational equipment at four of the sites operated by the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority across the island.

Today, the airport terminal includes a three-level departures concourse of approximately 10,000 square feet space.

Integrated with the existing ticketing concourse, the concourse comprises 66 airline check-in positions with passenger processing system, self-serve check-in kiosks and extended outgoing immigration and security screening stations with space to accommodate explosives detection equipment.

The ground floor contains a departure check-in hall with retail and food facilities. The upper floor has a new departure lounge with retail and food facilities.

New terminal facilities also include retail space, baggage handling systems and flight-information systems.
